Tips and advice for creating a business intelligence (BI) team

Do you have any tips or best practices for creating a business intelligence (BI) team? Should the BI team be all internal, or should we look for outside help?

You might hate me for this answer, but it depends. Yes, I know that that's the standard consultant response. I would ask you this, though: Do you have people at your organization with prior BI implementation and/or optimization experience that would be useful as part of a BI team? And are you implementing a new BI application, or is this merely the extension of a current one?

I ask because the answers to these questions — and others — will drive the ultimate answer to your question.

As a general rule, it's hard for me to conceive of an organization without internal BI expertise effectively using BI tools on its own. Also, be aware of having too much BI technology, a subject discussed in my next book: The Next Wave of Technologies: Opportunities in Chaos.
